Battle Formation Guide Level 24



The perfect unit for this level were elite pikemen with special ability upgrade more than 3. If his ability occurs when he is facing a cavalry, he would hurt archer behind it and certainly kill the archer. But if his ability occurs when he is facing archer, then the cavalry would greatly wounded. Despite all that, this ability gave a pikemen to get always First Hit in the next turn. The higher the upgrade, the better the result.

Defender were very strong. Even joint attack between 3 units altogether won't kill him.

Do you see blank line in the top tiles? Never put a decoy or flanking unit in the top, because it would makes enemy having two target decoy at a time. it would not turns out like what we want it to if the enemy have a chance ruined out formation plan.

Battle Formation Unit Behavior


Moving Behavior

1. This is a turn-based game and in the beginning of every battle, your unit always moves first.
2. Queue between all of your units is start from front to back, and from each line, the top unit moves first, followed by unit below him. The enemy units have the same behavior.
3. Units would keep moving forward until he encounter other unit, and attack. For archer, he would stop and attack if there are enemies in his shooting range.
4. If there is no one in front of him, the unit would move forward until reach the edge. If still no units encounter him, he would turn to move closer to the general.
5. The unit would never turn to other lines unless he reaches the edge. The unit would also never move backwards.

Attacking Behavior

1. If a unit encounter more than one enemies, he would choose the least health and attack it, no matter what. You could use this behavior in your tactic and strategy. See <inner link: strategy guide> and <inner link: tactic guide>.
2. Units with Defensive stance would never move from their spot, no matter what. This also could be used in tactic and strategy. See <inner link: strategy guide> and <inner link: tactic guide>.
3. Archer doesn't attack diagonal so did melee unit.
4. The difference between 1 and 10 units in one tiles is the attack would multiplied with the total units, but not the defend.
5. Damage taken from a tile is taken by first unit. If his health wasn’t that much, the damage is given to the second unit, this would keep going until the damage is runs out or no unit in tiles can bear the damage which means the tiles would be empty.

this level is the last time you could train units before you going deeper in the desert, train as much as you can, but the question is what units you should train? If you play normally, then I suggest to train three quarter of pikemen, and a quarter of archers. But it's up to your strategy and unit mastery.

See the units in your most left (top) and in the most right (bottom)? they intended to kill the general.
If you use both melee unit, take the both side would has no difference. but if you use 1 melee and 1 archer which the archer behind the melee unit, then take the right only. If you use left side, then you'd lose one turn of the archer to attack. Read Moving Behavior at Battle Formation Unit Behavior. See point number 2.

If you want to kill all enemies, use this formation:

Use this formation to eliminate the right and left side of the enemy, then the pikemen and the archers in your right side would kill the general.

This is a tutorial level. This is a time when you were introduced to the battle system.

The main purpose were to let you know how the battle system were.
It's a turn based, but you can only arrange your soldier at the first time.

The easiest formation would looks like this:

Battle Formation Unit Guide

Pikemen

Pikemen is the regular troops and also the cheapest unit. He using both hands to handle his very long pike which makes him able to thrust deep into the cavalry even before the cavalry arrives. But his attacks were dull against the thick-shielded defender. Pikemen also very vulnerable to archer since he hadn't had any shield.
Strenghtness: Cavalry (+50% damage)
Weakness: Defender, Archer
Elite Unit ability: Have a change to also strike an enemy behind targeted enemy with the same amount of damage.
Elite occurred: elite pikemen tech level * 5 + 10 in percent


Archer

Archer were the most important unit on the battlefield. He could reach target in 2 square. But the further the target, the less damage he dealt.
Strengthness: Pikemen (+30% damage)
Weakness: Defender
Elite unit ability: Range is increasing to 3 square.
Damage in 1 square range: 100%
Damage in 2 square range: 50%
Damage in 3 square range: 25%


Defender

Defender have the biggest health and defense. He holds a very thick shield and a short sword. His shield could hold almost everything and the sword could counter-attack the opponent. This makes the defender is the perfect unit to fight against defenseless long weapon pikemen. But this heavy unit could be easily smashed unbalance by the cavalry.
Strengthness: Pikemen (+30% damage)
Weakness: Cavalry
Elite unit ability: Had a change to block total damage.


Cavalry

Without any doubt, cavalry is the most expensive unit. He mounted on horse and equipped with both pike and shield. He would easily smashed down defender with his forced attack. But unfortunately the ordinary pikemen could easily stopped cavalry with their long pike.
Strenghtness: Defender (+30% damage)
Weakness: Pikemen
Elite unit ability: Had a change to deal a double damage.


General

The leader in the battlefield. Every level requires the general to live. His job were to giving orders, so he doesn't need to move from his spot. General could also attack enemy units but the bad news is, he only attack once and only one square. So, beware of the archer!

Battle Formation Strategy Guide


First Hit

First Hit

Since the attack would multiply by total units in a tile, then having the first hit would be the advantages. If there are two units faced each other’s with the same number, same race, same quality, same upgrade, the first unit attacked would definitely the winner. Your unit in the right picture would got first hit, while in the left picture, you gonna walk forward once, and then the enemies walk forward and hit you first.

Every unit always attack once in a turn. So, what happened if two of your unit both encounter one unit of enemy? Both your unit would attack enemy once, but only one of them would be attacked back. In the left picture, only one unit would attack in that turn. but in the right picture, both your unit can attack both. This could be worse with three of your unit altogether attacking one unit. Is it worst? No. You may made it worse with archer behind your unit. Further more, you could also add elite archer behind those normal archer. But I doubt your enemy can bear the damage anymore after 4 attacks.


Flanking

Unit behavior in Battle Formation would makes a unit who encounter more than one enemy to attack the unit with has the least health. You could use this behavior to Flanking enemy unit. You need two unit, one unit as a main striker, and the other unit which has just one man in a tile as a decoy. Use both of them like Joined Attack, which makes enemy unit encounter both of them. Enemy would automatically attack the less health which is the tile with one soldier on it.
In the picture, the archer were strong against pikemen, so there would be a damage bonus. the line of pikemen with one unit on it were just decoy. The enemy would surely attack him because of his low health and archer were free to attack pikemen without being attacked. you could add one more archer to be the main attacker to gain more damage.

Covering Unit

We know that having a First hit is important. put a covering unit with just one man on it with a defense stance would makes the enemy got his first unit on a decoy, and then the main attacker behind the covering unit would deliver first hit. This tactic were seems useful in the picture, but in the complex situation, this could be pretty helpful.

We could make unit with aggressive stance not to move at the first turn with put a covering unit in front of him. See Covering Unit for more explanation. You might use this method if you want to use this unit later or just defense with a counter attacks. Or else you could use it to another purpose like you holding an archer save in the back while your other unit hitting enemies defender first.
See in the picture, cavalry and archer in the back would start to attack if the two pikemen in the front can't handle the enemies.

You could advanced Joined attack with add some archer like in the picture. But it's not much enemy put a fool formation like this.

Line of Archers

As a ranged unit, archer has an advantage to be untouchable. The picture shows example which fully uses this theory. This could be worse if you use elite archer, so you could form 2 layers of untouchable archer.  Even defender would think twice to pass your archer.

Battle Formation Storyline


Story line

Once upon a time... there're a kingdom in an island. The people live in happily, prosperity and peacefully.

Then suddenly, a few years ago. There were waves of enemies once every a couple of days knocking on the castle door. The Commander which played by the player keeps defend all of the time. At first, the waves begin in a small numbers, but it keep growing each days. One day, the commander decided that he has to rush for it. He wants to eliminate them till the last men or else they begin to be a thread to the kingdom.

He began to march them. After few battles has passed, the enemies grows grows weaker. One day, the enemies fled to the desert. They seems to hoped that the commander would cease and stop chase them. But the commander has gone proud and eager to keep pursue.

After the battle in the desert, enemies were defeated. But in his last breath, the enemy commander laughing while mumbling that his goal were achieved. His job were to be a bait to draw the player's army far away from the castle while his main army march to the unguarded castle.

The Commander didn't realize it. Anything were seems too easy, but he just keep going. Now he has to march back immediately to the castle. But, realizing that the enemy would be stronger than now, he decided to ask for help with the old friend of his king in the Defender Village. He really need the help of the Defenders who would be perfect to outmatch the enemies archer who is pretty annoying.

Finally they arrived on time at the castle and start defend the incoming wave. The enemies really getting tougher this time, not to mention the commander seems outnumber. The commander seems hard to match the enemies.

The ground suddenly trembling, a marching of a cavalry come to an aid to the king, and to honor the friendship between the king, and the Defenders. With the help of a cavalry, they could match the enemies. A few battle passed and the enemies seems retreating, but with the speed of the cavalry, the commander could always chase the enemies.

At one battle, they caught up in the middle of a ruined place. Something seems to be happened long ago in the past. Something were build here. But they ignored it and keep pressing the enemies. But these ruins makes the cavalry slowed down and can't be as effective as usual  they start to loose the enemy, but they keep chase the enemies before the enemies reunited with their reinforcement unit up in the north, where the enemies castle were sought.

Battle after battle, day after day, month after month, They finally come to the front door of enemies castle. Their number were greatly increased. Very much until only certain tactic and formation could be applied. Their strength were also increased. But the battle has to be done, and the final battle were begun.

There's not much left in the commanders army, much heroes has fallen, much friend and brothers has fallen. The commander has won the battle with an expensive cost. But the enemy has defeated. The thread has eliminated. Peace once again is among us. The land would be restored, the damaged would be repaired, and the life would go on.

Battle Formation, War of The Medieval Released


In October 2010, battle formation has officially sponsored by ageofgames.net and start uploaded also in October 2010. There were several revision after a week launched. Battle Formation were become one of the best of ageofgames at that time. It stays in the front page for several months.

The Concepts

The main concepts of Battle Formation were the formation. You know what the best unit to beat some unit. and the game showed you the enemy formation and challenge you to make formation to beat it. But it's not that easy because most of enemy formation is tricky and makes the player has to use another strategy besides using the right unit. You can see it at Battle Formation Tactics Guide and Battle Formation Strategy Guide

After you select a level in the world map, you would enter the game. The game itself were divided into two section, which is preparation, and battle.

Preparation Section

In this section, enemy has made their formation. Enemy formation represented with a tile which the icon represent the race(pikemen, archer, defender, cavalry, and general), the letter at the bottom left represent the stance(A for aggressive, D for defensive or stand still), and the number in the bottom right represent the number of unit within the tile.

In Battle Formation, units can be hired as long as you have the required resources which is food, metal, and gold. once you hired units, you could use them, or just keep them. their numbers were on their top left of their icon. Notice that some of the unit were locked at the beginning and opened later in certain level.

Within the game, you would introduced to the game one at a time, starts from the unit, the tactics, the unit behavior, and many others. After you know the necessary rule, you have to use it all to beat the enemy formation. Once you hit the Start button, then the game played and you moved to battle section.

In this section, you could just watch how effective your formation is. You can't edit except restart the level.

The author doesn't take any special time to create this game, but instead of using his after work hour and also weekend while he got nothing to do. But it costs the time in development process to be more than a year which starts in August 2009 and released in October 2010.

This is not the author's first game. The first game were poorly monetized and results in lack of income. The game were The Egg. But it's a process for the author to improve and has a better understanding in how creating a games in flash based. After learning from the failed of the first game, he decided to choose battle formation as his second game.

The Early Process

In July 2009, The author write a simple concepts about turn based strategy which including a several unit which has it's own strength and weakness against each other. it sounds balanced and what the game is usually about. He create 3 units plus one archer.

Four Units in Battle Formation

The pike men is analogically using both two hands to hold a very long pike which makes him able to thrust mounted enemies like cavalry. But the heavy defender got very thick shield and able to block the pike and slip in and slash pike men. This makes pike a good against cavalry, and bad against defender.
The Defender is analogically using one hand to holds a heavy shield while the other hand holding a short sword. With the speed of cavalry, defender were easily knock unbalanced and fell off then stepped by them.
The Cavalry is analogically mounted on horse and could deliver much damage, but unit with a horse always comes with a price.
The Archer were always be on the battlefield with his advantage in range. But it's analogically the further he is from the enemies, the less accuracy he got.

Those were the main concepts. Any other ideas would added to complete them.
After the basic rule of each unit settled. the concepts were extend in what the unit can have more. The thought of a skill for each unit would be fun. Then the battle system, upgrade options, tutorial system, then so on...

After the concepts were seems almost complete, the author starts to contacts the graphics designer. The author choose Awaken Studio which already experienced in popular several games, few of them were game of Wandah who has a very good reputation in making tons of games in a short period. The author and the graphics designer were deal and both of them start working.

Vacuum Process

The author has been absent for about three months or more in the making process. The office hour of a programmer could be nasty. from standard 8 hours a day could be up to 16 hours or more in a day. So, the making process were freezes for about 3 or 4 months in the early months of 2010 and continues after.

About Author

The author is a part time flash developer job who know flash game development from a desperate friend who struggle his way through flash game development. At first, the author find himself enjoying to design and create his own game while usually he just play other people games. Right until now, he still find it interesting to do so. Furthermore, he still always find many ideas in any crossroads in the development process. This is why he always make a straight base ideas, and bend it every time he got an idea to make the game more exited.

The Beginning

The author were take a college in a IT major. The feel for games has start from the college, where most of the task and homework were represented in a game. I thought it's because most of the programming concepts would be better understood by university student through creating game where we can freely doing anything using theory we've just been taught.

Still involved in IT world, right after the author graduated, he work as a programmer at software house at Bali island for two years. In those period, battle formation 1 has born and released.

The Feel for Battle Formation

The author got the biggest motivation at the game development from the release of Battle Formation 1. Once it got the market, the author seems to has a boost of spirit and eager to make more games.

Actually the author also create another game besides Battle Formation series, but not really get the audience. One of his game were poor, lack of quality, and resulting many complaints and bad feedback. So he still feel most comfortable in continuing Battle Formation. But while he finishing the process of Battle Formation 2, he decided to end the series in part 3. The complexity of the game plus the bugs were pretty frustrating and sometimes he just felt it wasn't worth the time. So, he would do more in a small and casual game which were easier, less complex and makes the creativity ideas goes to improving the game and adding new feature and elements.

Work Style

the author were treat his game as a way to express himself. He free to design any gameplay he wants, any genre he wants, and with any storyline he wants. He free to do anything and there's no one tells him what to do. It pretty obvious when he were at Bali, he released a game which actually representing his office and his friends, right after he resign from the company. The game were Bugzilla, Software Development War.


The author were also most likely create a game what he really wants to create, that's why he never took much attention to the release timing, including Battle Formation. But after years passed, from 2009 to 2012, he feels that he need to took more attention to it, since he also look forward for the ads.

Besides creating his own, the author also do something else. He do porting actionscript 2 to actionscript 3 for Nyan Cat and programs Gangnam Solitaire for his friend which can't do much algorithm, while the author likes it. In mid 2013, he also has a promise to program a game with a zombie theme to be released at the Halloween event. Any work which seems interesting would be fine for the author.

One thing about game programmer. In the early years, there's not much people have a will to do game development in the author's neighborhood. So, he develop every games alone. Single programmer up until now.

One last thing about the author. He likes to have a positive feedback, suggestion, and sort of. He also really satisfied when people enjoy his game and makes him eager to do better next time. His ultimate goals for all this time were to make people fun with his game. It's a something he would buy for it.
